Outfit of the Day

This lovely woman walked by and I was pumped with how fabulous she came to the event today! Heading downstairs to the big ballrooms, she was going to duke it out against the greats wearing this excellent outfit! I even offered her a green bracelet to go with the green outfit, and she happily accepted. Let’s see some more exciting outfits tomorrow!

The Real NABC Starts Today

Welcome!

Today is when we really get going with the tournament, we have the start of two major events (the Nail and the Soloway), lots of side and limited games, two lessons and hey! Our hospitality today is even a breakfast sandwich (make sure to come by the game a little early, so that you can grab a bite!)

Whether it’s your first time at a national, or you’re a seasoned vet, welcome to the real start to the NABC.

Highlights To Watch For

Nail Starts Today!

Last year, David Berkowitz and Jeff Meckstroth took home the W. Who will take an early lead? Who will make their mark?

Soloway Begins!

A 7 day event starting with a 2 day swiss, it's anyone's game right now. We'll be back with more information about seating and important matches as they come in.

Hospitality

This morning we'll have breakfast sandwiches outside the playing rooms starting at 9AM:)

Special Seminars

Ever struggle with drawing trumps too early? Or somehow leaving them until you're exposed? Stop by Adam Parrish's "When To Draw Trumps" seminar. And if you're a curious, creative mind that loves to connect the dots -- pop by Norman Beck's Odd Things & Bridge! Should be a fun day for lessons.

Today's Players Behind the Cards

The Nail LM Pairs are named after Bobby Nail. Not only was he an accomplished player, having won 4 national events, placing second in 11 of them and represented the USA in the Bermuda Bowl twice, but he was also an avid system tinkerer. He loved fiddling with ideas and then making them come to life -- a prime example of this, was his "Big Diamond Bidding System" (and people talk about juniors being *too* creative). This system featured a weak NT, an unbalanced big diamond and a forcing club opening that may not be strong. This was back in 1965 -- who's pushing the creative envelope now, huh?

Then let's chat about the Soloway -- this event is named after Paul Soloway. While Bobby Nail competed in 2 Bermuda Bowls, Paul Soloway WON 5 times. He also won 30 National Events. And today, Jeff Meckstroth is the overall Masterpoint leader, but in 2007, Paul Soloway held that title handily with over 6000 points separating him from second place. Paul Soloway loved bridge. He competed with the best and he made damn sure he was acknowledged as one of the best. He was a fascinating player who loved the game until the very end, as after he passed in 2007, he was cremated with a deck of cards in his hands.

Good luck today to those participating, and shoutout to the OGs.
